(Hamilton, Bermuda, January 26, 20010) - Bermuda CableVision has donated $45,000 to support three local organisations, Bermuda Red Cross, the Bermuda Divisional Headquarters of The Salvation Army and the Feed My Lambs Ministry, in helping Haiti in their recovery from the devastating earthquake that hit the island on January 12 and the subsequent aftershock on January 20.
The donations were presented by Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision, at the company's annual 'Salute to Service' banquet, held on Saturday night (January 23) at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Ann Spencer-Arscott, Director of the Bermuda Red Cross and Major Doug Lewis, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army, each collected $20,000 cheques on behalf of their organisations. Phillip Rego, Founder of the Feed My Lambs Ministry, received a $5,000 donation.
Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision, says: “It is a true credit to Bermuda, situated just over 1,000 miles from Haiti, that this community has rallied so feverishly to support the international relief mission in the two weeks since the earthquake. Our employees wanted to support this heartfelt response and we decided to make our largest-ever charity donation in the company's history to three local organisations who are helping Haiti. The charities have the infrastructure already in place to ensure that our donation can assist the Haitians in their recovery efforts as soon as possible.”
Bermuda Red Cross and the Bermuda Divisional Headquarters of The Salvation Army mounted major public campaigns for financial donations in the days that followed the initial earthquake. Phillip Rego, a local philanthropist, has been helping impoverished Haitian orphans on a full-time basis since early 2009 when he set-up the charity, Feed My Lambs Ministry. Mr. Rego renewed his appeal to the community in Bermuda for financial aid and volunteers in the aftermath of the earthquake.
The Salvation Army was previously honoured with a quarterly Bermuda CableVision Community Service Award in January 2008 for its Feeding Programme, which offers a mobile canteen meal or sit-down meal facility at its North Street facility. Phillip Rego is also a prior winner of a Bermuda CableVision Community Service Award. Mr. Rego received an award in October 2009 for providing inspiration to young Bermudians through his work helping impoverished children in Haiti. Young Bermudians accompany his charity on its regular mission trips to encounter the adversity that children in Haiti face.
