THE BERMUDA CONFERENCE OF SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS
AND THE SALVATION ARMY ARE HONOURED WITH
CABLEVISION'S COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

-- First Ever Rollin Nathan Community Award Also Presented --

(Hamilton, Bermuda - January 27th, 2008) - The latest recipient of CableVision's quarterly Community Service Award is two local organisations: The Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and the Salvation Army.  The organsations were honoured last night at a banquet attended by the Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance; the Hon. Nelson B.A. Bascome, JP, MP, Minister of Health; the Hon. K.H. Randolph Horton, JP, MP, Minister of Education; the Hon. Terry Lister, JP, MP, Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and E-Commerce; the Hon. Derrick V. Burgess, JP, MP, Minister of Works and Engineering; Junior Minister, Senator Wayne Caines; and Opposition party members Patricia Gordon-Pamplin and Louise Jackson.  Sir John Swan was the guest speaker.

Bermuda CableVision's annual “Salute to Service” banquet takes place each year in January and provides an opportunity to celebrate and recognise current and previous award recipients in a special way.  The Community Service Award was established in 2004 to recognise individuals and organsations making a difference in the community through volunteer service.  Awards are presented quarterly.

For the past 10 years, the Salvation Army has been operating its “Feeding Programme” – which includes either a mobile canteen meal or a sit down meal at the organisation's North Street facility – five nights a week.  Teams of dedicated volunteers tirelessly ensure that hot meals are provided to those in need.  In complement to this, four of the eleven congregations of the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists have organised feeding programmes.  For example, for the past 33 years, the Hamilton Seventh Day Adventist Church has been cooking and serving hot meals two nights a week from its King Street location.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP, offered her congratulations to the organisations at the banquet: “The Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and the Salvation Army deserve our recognition and our praise.  Both organisations represent a legacy of leadership in the Bermuda community.  These churches and their respective congregations believe in community outreach and have forged a real connection with the local community and sought to ‘do good'.  We salute them as we celebrate their achievements and contributions to our community.  On behalf of the entire Government of Bermuda, I congratulate them tonight.”

Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision, said: “Each of these organsiations represents the best of Bermuda through their commitment to community and their will to make a difference in the lives of others.  The support that these organisations and their dedicated volunteers provide is both heartening and reassuring.  Bermuda CableVision is proud to celebrate the Bermuda
Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and the Salvation Army tonight.”

To help support the work of these organsiations, the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and the Salvation Army each received a $2,000 donation from Bermuda CableVision.

At the banquet, Harold Minors, 51, was also recognised with the first ever Rollin Nathan Community Award for his work with The Centre on Angle Street.  Mr. Minors first began working with this community centre at the age of 18 and has been a loyal employee ever since.  As a senior community worker, Mr. Minors currently runs The Centre's evening programme providing sport coaching, homework assistance, counselling, mentoring and general support to youth and adults.

Rollin Nathan, Sales Manager with Bermuda CableVision, was responsible for the development of the Bermuda CableVision Community Service Award more than three years ago to honour volunteers in the community, and explains the meaning behind this new annual award: “We were looking for a way to recognise people in the community who are changing lives, not necessarily through volunteer work as those individuals are being recognised with our Community Service Award, but through their everyday activities such as their employment.  I am thrilled to recognise Harold Minors with our first ever Rollin Nathan Community Award for his work with The Centre.”

When asked about his commitment to what he does for a living, Mr. Minors said: “I feel young people need adult support.  When I was growing up, I didn't have that.  Everyone deserves the chance to grow and change, and to make something of themselves.  It doesn't matter how long it takes; it's the end result that counts.”
