BERMUDA CABLEVISION SECURES $750 DONATION
FOR BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF BERMUDA
(Hamilton, Bermuda, July 27, 2010) The mentoring charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda (BBBS), has been awarded a $750 grant from the Caribbean Cable and Telecommunications Association (CCTA) as a result of a nomination by Bermuda CableVision.
This is the fifth consecutive year that BBBS has benefited from a CCTA Community Charities Programme grant. Bermuda Cablevision nominated the charity again this year in recognition of its work helping young people to realise their potential. The Bermuda chapter of BBBS was founded in 1978 to connect children and youth with an adult mentor to act as a positive role model and friend.
Edward Cherwinski, Chief Financial Officer at Bermuda CableVision, presented the cheque to Patrina O’Connor-Paynter, Fund Development/ Marketing Communications Director at BBBS Bermuda.
Mr. Cherwinkski said: “We selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda for this donation again this year as the work they do in pairing young people with mentors is invaluable to our community and an ongoing need. Its mentoring services provide young people with the guidance and advice, proven to help them build self-esteem and confidence.”
Ms. O’Connor-Paynter says: “We are really grateful to Bermuda Cablevision for its continued support in nominating Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda for the CCTA donation, which will go towards our Core Mentoring Programme.”
BBBS facilitates the development of long-term one-on-one supportive relationships for young people, primarily from single-parent homes, by ensuring the strengths, interests and abilities of each volunteer mentor, known as a “Big”, is matched to the needs of their “Little”. Each “Big” spends a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year with their “Little” to help them build personal values such as self-esteem, responsibility and respect towards others.
Formed in 1983, the Caribbean Cable and Telecommunications Association represents cable and telecommunications providers throughout the Caribbean, and the programmers, software and hardware suppliers that support their operations. Its Community Charities Program was established in 1993 and has since funded more than 115 charities by giving over $238,000 in grants.
